The European Union of Arts (EUA) is an international association of culturally active individuals and legal entities. It was founded in Brussels in 1999 and was subsequently registered in Prague. Since the beginning of the new millennium its Presidium has been awarding the "European Award for artistic and cultural activities" and the "European Award for promoting arts and culture". Since 2011 the statue Golden Europea has been an integral part of the award. The statue symbolizes the historical contribution of the "old continent" to arts, culture and creative coexistence of all manking.
The first award was presented in 2000 to painter Yuri Gorbachev in New York. Consecutive prizes have been awarded to more than three hundred laureates from forty countries of all continents. The new "Gold Medal of Leo Tolstoy - European Award for writers and publicists" is awarded since 2013. This award is also intended for publishers and educators.
EUA is not closed up either in a limiting shell of conservative art perception or in false cultural elitism. Every cultural achievement which enriches other people spiritually, making them happier and nobler, and which above all connects them, deserves at least a gesture of recognition, if not a public award. And this is where the basic mission of EUA lies.
